Arts & Culture

I have been studying “underground” and “independent” music milieus in Egypt for the past few years. This has led to several public communications and publications (with some still to be published).

A first piece, published in 2013, and relaying the experience of young Alexandrian musician can be found here (in French).

This was followed by a collaboration with my friend and artist Khaled Kaddal, consisting in an exploration of the history of contemporary music-making in Egypt as well as the social and sonic foundations of authority. These works were presented in London, Aix-en-Provence and Copenhagen.

I am currently preparing a book chapter on the relations between music and politics in contemporary Egypt as well as working on the infrastructures of music-learning in Alexandria in the 2000s.
